Yesterday afternoon (July 17), the draw for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers for Asia took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – the headquarters of the Asian Football Confederation.
Lucky draws have brought Iran to a charming Group C with rivals Iraq, Bahrain, Hong Kong and Cambodia.
Immediately after the draw result, the Iranian Football Federation made an unprecedented decision in history.
Accordingly, Iranian women will be allowed to watch their team compete in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
The Iranian Football Federation has agreed to allow women to watch the matches of the country’s national team in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers with approval from the government. According to information from the Iranian press, the President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, announced the decision.
Mr. Taj has confirmed this request from the FFIRI Executive Committee and has been approved to take it directly to the Iranian Minister of Sports and Youth for further implementation.
Meanwhile, FIFA has also confirmed the issue. A FIFA spokesman said: “This is an important issue and we need to make sure that women can watch the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.”
Previously, Iranian women had been banned from stadiums since 1981 shortly after the Islamic revolution ended in 1979. The clerics said women should not witness extremist men.
However, in the next 2022 World Cup qualifiers, they will be able to legally watch football. And this will be a historic decision for football as well as for Iran.
