The Football Federation of Malaysia (FAM) has stopped the plan to strengthen the Malaysian team with naturalized players.
|Malaysia, despite having many naturalized players, still lost to Vietnam in both matches in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Asia.|
“The player naturalization is approved by FIFA” – FAM President Datuk Hamidin Amin shared: “The cessation of this program is because we want to scrutinize the future. However, clubs in the national championship can still naturalize players if they want to.”
“We must understand that two naturalized players are not a guarantee of progress to the World Cup. We had some problems in preparation due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, that is not an excuse, but we have to accept this reality.”
“I think it’s not fair to blame two naturalized players for the team’s overall performance. We lost to two higher-ranked teams (in the FIFA rankings), the UAE and Vietnam, but also won against Thailand, which has a higher ranking and is now heading to the Asian Cup qualifiers.
However, FAM President Datuk Hamidin Amin said he was suspending the plan to strengthen the Malaysian team with naturalized players. Especially when the Malaysian team is taking steps to prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
