The transfer window last summer saw one of the most remarkable farewells of the football world that Messi was no longer a Barcelona man. A new contract was agreed by both parties, but in the end it was not signed.
The reason is because, the Camp Nou team cannot meet the requirements of La Liga’s player salary limit. Meanwhile, the salary the Argentine superstar is receiving is too high even though he has accepted a salary reduction to stay. In the end, he accepted PSG’s offer to move to France to play.
Laporta once expected Messi to stay and play without pay
Recently, the president of Barcelona – Laporta has just shared about the above incident. He said: “I don’t have any reproach to Messi. I understand that he wants to stay but he is also under a lot of pressure from PSG’s offer. Everyone knows they’ve got a very good offer for him.”
“It’s really sad to let him go but I need to do what’s best for the team at the moment. No individual can put the collective at risk. I even hoped that Messi would change his mind at the last minute and stay at Barcelona without a salary. If that happens, the union will accept it. But of course, we can’t ask for that from a player of his level.”
Coach Koeman will stay at least until the end of his current contract
The current poor performance of Barcelona is causing many speculations about the future of coach Ronald Koeman. Many sources believe that Blaugrana has also put a few other coaches on the radar to be ready to replace the Dutch captain. Laporta has denied this. He said:
“Koeman will stay. He is a cule (Barcelona fans) like us. More than anyone else, he wants the team to do well. He has a contract and we need to respect that. With Xavi, I talk to him often because we are friends. We are proud that Koeman is here. People can think whatever they want but Koeman deserves our trust.”
Coach Koeman’s current contract with Barcelona is valid until the summer of 2022. There has not been any move on whether the two sides will extend. President Laporta also said that the club is trying to renew the contract with promising talents like Gavi or Ansu Fati.
